The recent school elections in Canyon County provide some interesting insights as well as lessons for civic leaders everywhere.
For our elected leaders--it never pays to have hidden agendas or motives when one runs for office. Be clear about what you stand for, what you intend to do, and most importantly, be completely transparent about your previous and current actions. No amount of damage control repairs a sullied reputation in the minds of your constituents.
Finally, I hope the Caldwell School Board understands how lucky they are to have the trust of their patrons. Theirs was the ONLY levy approved in Canyon County this time around, and they owe it to the citizens of the district to continue to improve the educational performance of the schools and student results. |

Rob recently spoke to the Partnerships for Sustainable Communities conference held at Boise State University, where he talked about the efforts to redevelop Caldwell's downtown core. Attached is a copy of the presentation that Rob made to the attendees, as well as a copy of Caldwell's Downtown Framework Master Plan.

Despite the amazing progress we have made in Caldwell over the past decade, much is left to be done. We need to continue our partnerships with economic development organizations such as CCEDC and the University of Idaho incubator. I want the city to take a more active role in supporting local businesses and industry by establishing an economic support unit within city staff. This unit would assist businesses through governmental regulations (local and otherwise), look for small business grant opportunities, serve as an advocate for businesses under regulatory or environmental hardship, and assist in locating new businesses to Caldwell. The expansion of TVCC into the downtown core serves the dual purpose of increasing educational opportunities and increasing the economic demand in the downtown core. The city must continue its partnerships with the College of Idaho and the local school districts to ensure community support for their programs. Finally, we need to listen to Caldwell businesses, discern what they need from the workforce, and support finding the right educational partners to deliver those capabilities. Caldwell’s leadership has the experience and knowledge to follow through on the progress we have made in recent years. We need to continue to support these activities that have significantly improved the quality of life and the environment in Caldwell, pay close attention to the metrics which measure our progress, and not allow ourselves to be distracted away from these core values. We have a positive leadership team that takes action and makes good things happen for Caldwell.
